QUESTION 1 ANSWER

What is the safest way to set up a fire for roasting marshmallows?

  • Let the fire burn down to embers before roasting
  • Build a large flame to speed up roasting
  • Add lighter fluid to keep the fire going
  • Keep marshmallows close to an open flame for a quick roast

Although the fire needs to be hot, open flames are not necessary or desired. A bed of hot coals is more than sufficient to get the job of roasting marshmallows done. The less flames the better.

QUESTION 2 ANSWER

Why is it important to check roasting sticks before use?

  • To ensure they are clean and free of rust or splinters
  • To make sure they are long enough for sword fights
  • To see if they can support multiple marshmallows at once
  • To make the activity more fun

Marshmallow roasting sticks are usually long metal skewers or sturdy wooden sticks, and we must inspect them to ensure they are clean of all rust, splinters and / or sharp edges. This is also an important component of how we demonstrate our Value of Demonstrating a Caring Character.

QUESTION 3 ANSWER

Which of the following is NOT a correct safety precaution when roasting marshmallows?

  • Roasting marshmallows over treated wood
  • Keeping flammable items away from the fire
  • Ensuring children are supervised at all times
  • Being aware of wind direction to prevent embers from spreading

We only roast marshmallows over fires with good, clean wood. We don’t use fires with treated wood, plastic, or other dangerous stuff. This is to keep bad smoke out of the air so people don’t breathe it. It also stops the bad smoke from getting into the fire and making the marshmallows dirty or unsafe to eat.

QUESTION 4 ANSWER

What is the correct way to put out a flaming marshmallow?

  • Blow it out immediately
  • Shake it off the stick
  • Wave it in the air until it extinguishes
  • Throw it into the fire

All participants are to be briefed on this critical safety procedure: if a marshmallow catches fire, extinguish it immediately by blowing on it. Shaking or flinging the burning marshmallow is a common but dangerous instinct and must be avoided. Participants must be thoroughly briefed and closely supervised to ensure adherence to this safety rule and receive reminders as needed.
