Quiz Answers
Here are some expanded answers to the quick quiz questions. Don’t forget to take a look at how you’re doing on the leaderboard at the bottom of the page.

QUESTION 1 ANSWER
Which of the following is part of the preparation phase for counting with the tally counter?
- Ensure the hand tally counter is functioning properly before use
- Zero tally counter (clicker)
- Assign a responsible Facilitator to operate the tally counter during learner counting
- Review the trip attendance list and prepare for verification
- All of the above
Preparation phase requires that the tally counter (clicker) is functioning properly and has been set to zero before starting the counting process. An experienced and responsible facilitator must be assigned to operate the counter and then review the trip attendance list in preparation for verification with someone else.

QUESTION 2 ANSWER
Which of these sentences is incorrect?
- Once the assigned facilitator has positioned themselves at the exit door of the bus / vehicle, learners should exit as fast as they can
- Click the tally counter once for each learner exiting the bus.
- Maintain full focus on the counting task without distractions.
- If multiple buses are involved, assign a separate Facilitator with a tally counter to each vehicle.
Once the assigned facilitator has positioned themselves at the exit door of the bus / vehicle, learners should exit one at a time and without rushing. This is to ensure accurate counting.
When using the counter, one click = one learner exiting the bus. The facilitator should not get distracted and maintain full focus on this task only. We use a separate counter and facilitator per vehicle.

QUESTION 3 ANSWER
After all learners have exited, and the final count is announced, what should NOT happen next?
- Show the group where the bathrooms are as soon as they get off the bus
- Compare the tally counter total with the trip attendance list and update the WhatsApp in school group with Heading: “Bus Numbers or Number on Bus”
- If the numbers do not match, conduct an immediate recount and verify against the attendance list.
- If any discrepancies remain, identify and resolve missing student issues as soon as possible.
We do not do anything until we have verified the head count numbers. We do this by confirming our Hand Tally count with the attendance list and confirm it with each other and the appropriate teachers / client group leader. Going to the toilet and doing camp welcoming and briefings should only happen once numbers have been confirmed.

QUESTION 4 ANSWER
If the number on the tally counter does not match the expected number and there is no time to do a recount there and then, which of the steps below should be taken immediately:
- Proceed to welcome and perform a body check confirmation of numbers
- Ask a fellow facilitator to start counting heads as you lead learners to the welcoming area
- Report the number on the tally counter and the number on the bus on the camp group, clearly stating the difference and that you are “proceeding with verification”
- Consult with the Camp Manager & Coordinator, as well as the Teachers
- Refer to the missing child SOP
If the number on the tally counter does not match the expected number, these are steps immediately followed:
Step 1: Report the number on the tally counter and the number on the bus on the camp group. Clearly state in the group message: “Confirmed headcount on arrival: X learners on the bus. Expected: Y learners. Proceeding with verification.”
Step 2: Camp Manager & Coordinator Verification. They reconfirm the expected number from the latest communication with the school and ensure the discrepancy is taken up with the teachers.
Step 3: Urgent Confirmation with Teachers. Verify the approach before moving forward.
Step 4: Welcoming & Body Check Confirmation. Start the welcoming process while simultaneously conducting a physical body count while the Camp Manager confirms numbers directly with the teacher. If the discrepancy remains, follow the Missing Child SOP immediately

QUESTION 5 ANSWER
Once we have confirmed that the numbers are correct, which of the following sentences is NOT part of the correct thing to do?
- Delete any previously reported discrepancies / inaccurate counts’ from the WhatsApp group history
- Update the current head count vs. expected numbers on the appropriate WhatsApp group
- Update all necessary attendance logs and inform the teachers
- Ensure no-one is left behind after the camp by repeating the counting process when campers get back onto the buses to depart
Once it has been agreed that the correct number of campers have arrived, we are required to record the final count in the SCHOOL WHATSAPP GROUP or attendance log and notify the group leader or teacher. We repeat the counting process when learners leave the camp to ensure no one is left behind.
